Heated Clothing

Heated Clothing

The key to an enjoyable and safe ride is to keep comfortable, and nothing can keep you more comfortable in cold conditions that heated clothing. Heated motorcycle clothing is made by several manufacturers, and these manufacturers differ in their philosophy about how to keep warm.

The most popular item has been the heated motorcycle vest, because it's been recognized that by keeping the torso and vital organs warm, the rest of your body stays warmer too. When you remain warm, you'll remain alert, your reflexes will work better and you'll ride safer.

Heated vests provide a high level of warmth without a lot of bulk. Heated vests usually pack down small that make them easy to carry when not actually wearing them. Good designs offer additional benefits, such as providing extra insulation, a barrier against the wind, and resistance to water. Widder, Aerostich, BMW and Gerbing make heated vests. In addition to a heated vest, Gerbing makes heated jacket and pants liners, heated jackets, heated pants and heated suits.

Aerostich vests are made of a fuzzy fleece-like material so are a little more bulky, but may hold more heat with less current. Widder vests are available with a heated collar or without. Widder vests can be extended to cover the arms with arm chaps that are worn under your jacket. Widder also makes leg chaps to cover the legs, which are worn under your riding pants. The biggest advantage to this modular design is that you can carry the chaps with you and add them as needed, gaining the benefit while minimizing the bulk of your cold-weather gear.

Gerbing's jacket liners are designed to be worn under your riding jacket. They're thin and easy to wear under an unlined jacket, but will add extra bulk to a lined jacket. Their fully heated sleeves provide warmth down and around the arms, but they can't be removed or turned off. Gerbing jackets, pants and suits are intended to be worn as your primary outer wear, and should be evaluated against other dedicated riding apparel. When the weather warms up, you can't easily remove your heated jacket, which happens to be your primary riding jacket. This design works best in climates that don't get warm very often.

We've found that the Widder system offers the most flexibility, provides more enough heat, and they are a great company to do business with. The rest of this discussion will focus on the selection and setup to use a Widder vest, but the principles can be applied to heated gear from other manufacturers. Next
